Mostly Outside

Walking, hiking, gardening, horse riding, bird watching, nature watching … mostly I like to spend time outside. I write about the things I notice, little things and big things. Join me as I explore my corner of the world, on the south coast of Western Australia. I promise not to get heavy with politics or campaigning. Mostly Outside aims to bring a little bit of joy into your mid-week inbox.

Mostly Outside is a free publication and generally comes out on Wednesdays, but not every week.

A bit more about me

We remain enmeshed in natural rhythms and cycles, regardless of technology and our disconnection from nature. I’m interested in what that means for us as individuals, for humanity as a whole, and for the planet we call home. I am interested in the places, both physical and ideological, where people and nature intersect, where our biological reality meets our modern selves. So these are the things I write about. That might sound heavy, but on Mostly Outside I keep it light. It’s mostly about noticing the world around me.

I have had a long career as a science writer, mostly as a freelancer, and have written about agriculture and environment for many publications.

My first book What’s for Dinner? - Our food, our choices, our planet was published by Thames and Hudson Australia in June 2023 and is available in good bookshops throughout Australia and online.

I am based ion the south-coast of Western Australia and work from a home office surrounded by towering karri trees.
