As a child I lived in the hilly suburbs of Adelaide in a house with a single flat, low inclined asbestos tiled roof. Possums abounded in the nearby gum trees, and I swear most nights they would use the roof expanse as a race track!
I will never forget the sound of scrapes and scrabbles as they ran, nor their incessant hissing when they disagreed as to which possum had won the circuit.
I remember my son learning a poem in primary school that went something like: 'There's possums in our roof, how sweet/ You'd think we'd hear the whisper of their feet/ But no! They rush about in football boots ...' I'm probably misquoting slightly, but you get the picture. :)
How exciting for you Jill - a possum and a timeline!! I'm tucked away in my writing retreat in the (currently freezing) Adelaide Hills. There are koalas here. I have yet to spot one, but I can hear their distinctive calls at night so I know they are not far away. Thankyou for the shout out! Your book will definitely be one that I add to my collection of books that must be held :)
